AI Scammers Just Pulled Off a $25 Million Heist Using Deepfake Video Calls

According to Hong Kong police, scammers pulled off one of the most elaborate deepfake heists to date by cloning the CFO’s face and voice—along with multiple other employees—to dupe a worker into approving a massive transaction. It wasn’t just a fake email or a spoofed phone call. This was full-blown AI-powered deception, complete with an entire cast of deepfake imposters.

By the time the fraud was uncovered—only after the worker double-checked with company headquarters—the money was gone.

It’s proof that generative AI has crossed a dangerous threshold: It’s now realistic enough to convincingly impersonate real people, in real-time, on live video calls.

Hong Kong police have arrested six people linked to this and other AI-assisted scams, but the true masterminds remain at large. Investigators say fraudsters used AI to trick facial recognition software into approving fake identities for loans and bank accounts—suggesting a broader pattern of AI-powered financial fraud.

This case also raises uncomfortable questions for corporations. If an employee can be tricked into sending $25 million to a scammer because a deepfake CFO told them to, how can businesses defend against this kind of attack?
